Norwalk Hospital Appoints Surgical Director of The Smilow Family Breast Health Center
Jeanne Capasse, MD, FACS, of Fairfield, has been appointed Surgical Director of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital. Dr. Capasse, an expert in breast surgery, is an assistant attending surgeon at Norwalk Hospital.

Under the direction of Dr. Capasse, the Smilow Family Breast Health Center is committed to providing outstanding breast health care -- from prevention and screening to diagnosis and treatment.

"My goal is to make excellent breast care available to all women in our community in a timely fashion. For any breast–related concern - an abnormal mammogram, a painful lump or a concern about being at high risk for breast cancer - our Center can help," Dr. Capasse said.

"The Smilow Family Breast Health Center’s fully integrated program will guide women through the often frightening and confusing evaluation process with the feeling that they are in capable hands and that the information they need is just a phone call away," she said.

Dr. Capasse explained that, "With any breast abnormality, the initial information gathering stage can be daunting. Our staff helps women make the necessary appointments to research their options and is available to explain in simple terms the often-complex medical information."

"This enables women to achieve our shared goal of making informed decisions that result in the best outcomes," she added. Through the Center's singular focus on breast care, women have a team of experts working for them to ease the fear associated with having a breast abnormality.

Dr. Capasse joined the Medical Staff of Norwalk Hospital in 1995. She has served as Co-Director of Surgical Critical Care at Norwalk Hospital and was formerly the Assistant Chairman of Department of Surgery. In addition, she was Secretary of the Norwalk Hospital Medical Staff from 1998 to 2000.

She has served on many Hospital and Medical Staff committees, such as the Surgical PCE Committee, which she currently chairs, Critical Care Committee, Neoplastic Disease Committee, Trauma Committee, Critical Care Quality Assurance/Improvement Committee and the Institutional Review Board.

Prior to joining Norwalk Hospital, Dr. Capasse was an assistant attending in general surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, NY and Director of The Breast Screening Center from 1992 to1995 and held a teaching appointment as an instructor in surgery at Columbia University, New York, NY.

A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Capasse completed her internship and residency in General Surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center (SLRHC), New York, NY.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, her professional affiliations include memberships in New England Surgical Society, New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, American Medical Association, American Medical Women’s Association, Fairfield County Medical Association and Connecticut State Medical Society.

Dr. Capasse is the recipient of numerous awards including the Distinguished Service Award of the Norwalk Hospital Department of Surgery and the Frank J. Scallon Award for Surgical Innovation for establishing the sentinel node biopsy protocol for breast cancer staging. She was a three-time recipient of the Malcolm Beinfield Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Physician Assistant Surgical Residency Program. As a resident, she received the Surgical Resident Teacher of the Year Award at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center.
