Norwalk Hospital will honor two philanthropic leaders: Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chairman and CEO of GE, Fairfield, CT, and Grace Cole Jones of Greenwich, beloved Norwalk Hospital Volunteer, at its 2008 Crystal Ball to be held on Saturday, November 1st in a party tent on the hospital campus.

GE's Jeffrey Immelt of New Canaan will accept The Norwalk Hospital/Newman's Own Philanthropic Award, on behalf of the company. The award is given to a corporation or organization which exemplifies the spirit of creative, compassionate philanthropy for which Newman's Own, Inc., and its founder, the late Paul Newman of Westport, are so widely celebrated. Under Mr. Immelt's direction, GE has been named one of "The World's Most Respected Companies" in polls conducted by Barron's and the Financial Times. As Chairman and CEO, Mr. Immelt has created a climate of corporate citizenship which spans the globe. Led by Mr. Immelt, GE's involvement in social and environmental issues, including contributions to world health?has been extraordinary. Moving well beyond GE's corporate headquarters and local communities, they encompass efforts to improve health care delivery that reach as far as remote areas in Africa.

Grace Cole Jones will receive The Bedford Family Award for contributions to the hospital which best exemplify that love of mankind which inspired the generous support of the Bedford family. Mrs. Jones has facilitated and inspired gifts to the Hospital which total well over $5 million. She has also contributed more than 50,000 volunteer hours in the full-service Gift Shop, which now generates more than $100,000 each year to strengthen patient care. Projects funded by proceeds from the shop, which she founded half a century ago, include 19 new ambulances for the hospital. In 2002, the shop was officially named The Grace Cole Jones Gift Shop to recognize her role in its continuing achievements. With her late husband, Reginald H. Jones, former chairman of GE, she has been a major supporter of Norwalk Hospital since 1959. At his retirement, Mrs. Jones became the inspiration for GE's $300,000 tribute for the creation and funding of Norwalk Hospital's Grace Cole Jones Nursing Scholarships which support aspiring high school students seeking nursing careers.

The 2008 Crystal Ball is the 16th Annual Gala sponsored by the Norwalk Hospital Foundation to benefit Norwalk Hospital programs and services. This year's event will help underwrite new, fully-automated patient beds throughout the Hospital - a $1.3 million initiative. "The new beds incorporate software that provides centralized monitoring and safety alerts to keep nurses informed for quick action on issues that protect patient health. They will make an important contribution to the safety and comfort of patients and caregivers alike," said Mary Franco, President of the Norwalk Hospital Foundation and Vice President of Public Affairs, Norwalk Hospital. "The beds are also an excellent example of how the generosity of our friends helps to keep Norwalk Hospital a regional leader in health care."

Crystal Ball Committee members include Lauren Eason and Julie Murray, Co-Chairs, both of Norwalk, and Sue Bishop of Norwalk, Pam Blosio of New Canaan, Ann Blystone of Norwalk, Meghan Cioffi of New Canaan, Janet Dobos of Wilton, Saras Nair, M.D., of Wilton, Allison Passero of Norwalk, Kinnary Patel of Westport, and Carol Seligson of Greens Farms.
