As part of its ongoing, free community lecture series, Norwalk Hospital will present “Balloon Sinuplasty – A New Treatment for Sinusitis” on Thursday, October 6, from 7:30 – 9 pm in the Richard S. Perkins Auditorium, Norwalk Hospital.

Robert Weiss, MD, of Center for Advanced ENT Care in Norwalk and an otolaryngologist on staff at the Hospital, will be the feature presenter. Dr. Weiss will discuss painful sinus infections, called chronic sinusitis, and a new, minimally invasive, effective treatment option called balloon sinuplasty.

Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not involve the removal of sinus tissue and bone to widen sinus passages. According to Dr. Weiss, balloon sinuplasty is performed under local anesthesia and involves a catheter being guided into a narrowed or blocked sinus passage. A tiny balloon in then inflated to open and widen the passage, resulting in greater airflow, better sinus drainage, less congestion and a dramatically lower risk that a sinus infection will develop.

Dr. Weiss stated that balloon sinuplasty can be an excellent treatment for individuals who get frequent sinus infections, requiring rounds of antibiotic treatment, as well for those who regularly rely on allergy medications and nasal sprays in order to breathe comfortably.

“Balloon sinuplasty represents a significant breakthrough in how we treat chronic sinus infections,” said Dr. Weiss. “It is minimally invasive. There is no incision, no cutting of tissue and very little risk of bleeding, bruising or swelling. Many patients begin to notice relief within a few days.”
