Stamford Hospital has named Dr. Kevin M. Dwyer its new Director of Trauma & Surgical Critical Care and Vice Chair of Surgery. Dr. Dwyer has over 15 years experience in trauma care and surgery at both civilian and military hospitals.

Prior to joining Stamford Hospital, Dr. Dwyer spent 10 years at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., the only Level I Trauma Center in northern Virginia. As the Associate Chief of Trauma Services, Dr. Dwyer was responsible for clinical operations, protocol development and performance improvement. He also chaired the hospital’s Regional Trauma Committee, and managed the program’s outreach to outlying referral hospitals.

“Dr. Dwyer’s specialized expertise in trauma care will be a great asset to our team here at Stamford Hospital,” said Dr. Timothy Hall, Stamford Hospital’s Chair of Surgery. “He has worked in both the hospital and military settings, providing emergency medical services to patients suffering a wide spectrum of traumatic injuries. Because of his medical military career, he has also had the opportunity to handle cases that some physicians may never see in their lifetimes.”

Dr. Dwyer attended Georgetown School of Medicine, graduating with a commitment to the U.S. Army. He completed his surgical internship at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, and completed his general surgical residency at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado. Dr. Dwyer then spent three years as staff general surgeon at Blanchfield Community Army Hospital in Fort Campbell, Ky.

In 1994, the Army supported Dr. Dwyer in his fellowship at Inova Fairfax Hospital as well as the second year of his fellowship at the University of Maryland’s R. Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Upon completion of his fellowship, he returned to Tripler Army Hospital as Director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.

During his active military service, Dr. Dwyer’s military deployments included an EVAC Hospital in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm, the Emergency Medical Response Team to the crash of Korean Flight 801, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, among others.
