STAMFORD, CT - Stamford Hospital's Women's Breast Center has recently earned distinction as a 2013 Gold Prize Recipient of the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award (CQIA). The Center was recognized by the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award Partnership Inc. at a reception held on June 12, at the Saint Clements Castle in Portland, Conn.
The Women's Breast Center received the prestigious award for integrating 3D Tomography for all screening mammography patients into both of its breast imaging center locations. The technology yields a significantly higher level of accuracy of breast imaging, finding more cancers with fewer mammogram pictures, thereby saving time and decreasing unnecessary imaging and radiation doses. With the time savings of thousands of fewer x-ray images, the Center is able to provide immediate results to patients, thereby improving patient satisfaction and minimizing patient anxiety. The innovative and unique service is offered at no additional cost to patients.
"Because our goal is to find breast cancer at its earliest and most curable point, we are the only breast center in the region to provide 3D tomosynthesis to all screening mammography patients," said Dr. David Gruen, Director, Women Imaging and Co-Director of the Women's Breast Center. "Not only have we been able to diagnose more cancers, but in providing women with their results more quickly, we are also delivering a unique level of care to our patients."
The Women's Breast Center's team of experts, including skilled breast and plastic surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists along with a genetic counselor provide outstanding, comprehensive care while a dedicated breast nurse navigator helps to guide patients through the entire process. In addition to routine screenings, the Center also offers treatment of benign breast disease; evaluation and supervision for women at high risk for breast cancer; advanced diagnostic procedures including MRI, ultrasound and biopsy; and complete specialized breast pathology services.
The Connecticut Quality Improvement Award Partnership Inc. is the nation's first state-level quality award. It was founded in 1987 utilizing the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for Excellence in an effort to advance innovative programs that improve quality performance and marketplace competitiveness. Since then, the CQIA has recognized Connecticut manufacturing and service companies that excel in managing quality improvements for business success and growth. In 1995, healthcare, education government and other non-profit organization became eligible to apply.
