Madonna Sacco, a breast cancer survivor and lawyer specializing in medical malpractice defense, is mobilizing a team called “Advocacy” for the “Walk for Hope” of CancerCare of Connecticut Sept. 12 in her hometown of Fairfield.
She expects to recruit at least 10 family members and friends to accompany her on the five-kilometer fundraiser with proceeds to fund the free professional services offered by CancerCare of Connecticut.
From diagnosis through treatment and eventually positive genetic testing, Madonna was a member of a CancerCare support group that she describes as “an integral part of my health care team.”
“Instead of ‘Why Me?’, we decided to name our group ‘Why Not Me?’. The women supported each other with wit, intelligence and positive thinking. They were the highlight of my long days of recuperation.”
The Sunday outing starting at Jennings Beach is the fourth of an annual series that raised $30,000 last year when 230 covered the traditional 3 ½ miles route through downtown Fairfield. Both figures could go higher this year with good weather. But the walk takes place rain or shine.
Minimum donation for adult walkers is $25. Children 12 and under (and pets) participate free. They appear as individuals and in teams (family, corporate and schools) with T-shirts and refreshments for all. Sponsorships are also available.

CancerCare of Connecticut provides free, professional support services to anyone in Connecticut affected by cancer: people with cancer, caregivers, children, loved ones, and the bereaved.
