NORWALK, CT - Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) is promoting breast cancer awareness throughout the entire month of October, which is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Network’s cancer centers will be hosting, sponsoring and supporting programs and events that are educational, informative and even entertaining – but all will focus on the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. The schedule of events is as follows:
“Healing Cuisine – From Prevention through Survivorship” will be presented on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Perkin Auditorium at Norwalk Hospital. Dr. Richard Zelkowitz, medical director of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center and breast oncologist at the Whittingham Cancer Center will provide welcome and introductory remarks. The featured speaker Bridget Bennett, MS, RD will discuss how nutrition can help prevent cancer, ease side effects during cancer treatment and fuel the survivor. On Wednesday, October 12, 2016 the BRACA+ Support Group will meet at the Whittingham Cancer Center Conference Room at Norwalk Hospital from 6 to 7:30 pm. Support group facilitators Jessica Lipschutz, CGC, genetic counselor, Michelle Dailey, LMFT family therapist, and guest speaker Dr. George Zahrah, medical director, Cancer Genetic Program at Norwalk Hospital & FORCE® discuss “Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered.” Participants receive education and information regarding BRACA+ mutations, exchange ideas and coping strategies, how to feel empowered and validated in the experience. STARR99.9 Presents Spin-a-Thon For a Cause at JoyRide Cycling Studio in Ridgefield. Join Anna Zap, from STAR 99.9’sMorning Show The Ana & Raven Show, as she spins at JoyRide Cycling Studio in Ridgefield to raise money for WCHN’s Breast Cancer Services. A ‘JoyRide’ is a 50-minute indoor cycling class that includes aerobic and anerobic interval training. Rides are set to rocking music and incorporate resistance and speed training as well as upper body arm work. Get a great workout while supporting breast cancer services at WCHN. Breast Health Seminar: Paying It Forward: African-American Women Sharing Their Experience to Help Our Community takes place on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 6 pm in the Perkin Auditorium at Norwalk Hospital. This group provides a place for those who have been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer to connect and share information. Personalization of Breast Cancer Risk Management and Medical and Surgical Treatment will be held at Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Avenue in Danbury on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place in the Robilotti Conference Center. The featured speakers will be fellowship trained breast surgeons Dr. Valerie Staradub and Dr. Zandra Cheng and Dr. Michael Cohenuram of the Western Connecticut Medical Group - medical oncology/hematology at the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital. The continuing education lecture provides information and education about the latest research and practice updates on breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and risk evaluation.
