BRIDGEPORT, CT - The first annual New Year’s Eve High School Faceoff hockey doubleheader will be played December 31 at Webster Bank Arena.

The noon game will feature state Div. III champions Watertown-Pomperaug high school co-op team and Newtown High School. The 2 p.m. game pits Trumbull High School against Branford High School.

Tickets are $10 for both games and can be purchased at the arena’s Click It or Ticket Box Office. Pre-sale tickets will be available at each school for $8.00.

“This is going to be annual tradition. It’s great to reach out to the region and bring high school hockey to the arena,” said Howard Saffan, president of Harbor Yard Sports & Entertainment, which manages Webster Bank Arena.

Branford coach Adolph Brink said he remembers when doubleheaders were more common.

“I would like to thank Webster Bank Arena for providing such an exciting high school hockey event. The event featuring a high school hockey doubleheader stirs the memory of the great doubleheaders that the New Haven Coliseum hosted back in the 70's and 80's,” Brink said. “Not only does it give the student /athletes of Branford a chance to participate in this special event, it also pairs teams from different conferences to play under one roof . This in turn gives the casual high school hockey fan a tremendous opportunity to catch some great high school hockey action over the holidays. We couldn't be more happy to be playing a great program like Trumbull in this event.”

Newtown Coach Paul Esposito said “Newtown is extremely excited about the event, which is big rival game between southwest conference opponent Watertown/Pomperaug. We appreciate Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment promoting high school hockey in CT and having the opportunity to skate at a great facility!”

Harbor Yard Sports & Entertainment is committed to high school sports in Connecticut and bringing more teams to the 10,000-seat Webster Bank Arena, the region’s largest entertainment venue. The Northeast Christmas Classic high school basketball tournament, one of the most prestigious holiday tournaments in New England, is relocating to Webster Bank Arena on December 27-28 after 25 years of success at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.
