BRIDGEPORT, CT - Josh Winquist scored a highlight-reel, game-winning goal in the third period on Sunday, helping the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (34-18-1-1), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, defeat the Hershey Bears (28-17-8-3) at Webster Bank Arena, 2-1.

Bracken Kearns also tallied his team-leading 19th goal of the season in his return to the lineup following a two-game stint with the Islanders. Between the pipes, Jaroslav Halak (14-2-2) made 19 saves in the win.

The Bears opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game with a power-play goal courtesy of Christian Djoos. With Andrew Rowe in the box for elbowing, Paul Carey slid a pass to Djoos in the slot, where the defenseman waited before hammering a wrist shot over Halak’s glove at the 4:38 mark.

The Sound Tigers bounced back and tied the game with their own power-play goal from Kearns. With Tyler Lewington in the box for cross-checking, Kearns fed the puck to Ryan Pulock in the neutral zone and skated straight to the doorstep. Pulock returned the favor with a centering feed to the left post where Kearns backhanded it past Vitek Vanecek’s blocker at 18:46.

After a scoreless middle frame, Bridgeport took the lead for good with Winquist’s 10th goal of the season following a spectacular move in the offensive zone. Kyle Burroughs began the play when he forced a pass across to Winquist in the right circle, where the latter danced to the slot. The third-year forward did so by spinning and playing the puck between his legs before wristing an off-balance shot, which beat Vanecek’s glove at 7:01 of the third.

The Bears elected to pull Vanecek for the extra attacker with 65 seconds remaining, but Halak was solid, backstopping the Sound Tigers to a win in the club’s third-straight one-goal decision.

Both teams went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Bears outshot the Sound Tigers 20-17. Vanecek (14-10-7) made 15 saves in the loss.
