BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Springfield Falcons at home Saturday night by a final score of 3-0. Anders Nilsson made 24 saves while Anders Lee, Scott Mayfield and Mike Halmo all notched tallied for the Sound Tigers. Lee and Mayfield scored within 16 seconds of each other late in the first period, while Halmo’s goal came early in the third. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 43 points on the season.
Lee’s goal came at the 18:56 mark after sustained pressure by the Sound Tigers. Andrew Clark had the puck at the side of the net and threw it out in front. Lee had his stick in perfect position just outside the crease and tapped it in as he was being hauled down in front. The goal was Lee’s 18th of the season and made it a 1-0 Sound Tigers lead.
On the ensuing faceoff, Mayfield found the back of the net to put the Sound Tigers up 2-0 to end the first. He took a feed from Pierre-Marc Bouchard and had a skated into the high slot before he fired a wrist shot to beat Falcons goalie Jeremy Smith.
Neither team scored in the second period as Nilsson had his best period of the game. He saw 11 shots in the middle frame, but turned aside each one. The Sound Tigers killed off five of Springfield’s 12 power plays in the second, and ended the night a perfect 12-for-12 on the kill.
It remained a 2-0 game into the third period, but a 5-on-3 for the Sound Tigers gave them an opportunity to extend the lead. At the 12:48 mark, Mike Halmo sent a one-timer past Smith after taking a pass from Pierre-Marc Bouchard. It was Bouchard’s second assist on the night.
The Sound Tigers have two home games next weekend and will host the Albany Devils Saturday night before the Adirondack Phantoms come to Webster Bank Arena Sunday afternoon.
