HARTFORD, CT - The Connecticut Whale today announced its schedule of games for the upcoming 2012-13 American Hockey League season.
The 16th season of AHL play at the XL Center begins with the Whale’s home opener Friday, October 12, a GEICO Connecticut Cup battle with their Nutmeg State adversaries the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. That game faces off at 7:30 PM.
“Although we are still enjoying the warmth of summer, today’s finalization of the Whale schedule reminds us that the start of another great Whale season is just around the corner,” said Chuck Steedman, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the XL Center and AEG Management CT, which manages the Whale’s business operations. “We are extremely excited to welcome all of our loyal fans back into the XL Center for the start of what we are fully committed to making the best year of AHL hockey yet here in Hartford.”
Whale head coach Ken Gernander added, “Our staff and players are eager to begin another successful year in the great hockey market of Hartford, where so much has been accomplished in the 15 years of affiliation with the Ranger organization. Players that have come through the Whale have formed a huge part of the core of the strong group that makes up the Ranger roster, and this year’s Whale crop promises to be another that will be entertaining to watch, night in and night out.”
Of the rest of the Whale’s 38 home games, ten more will be on Friday nights, another ten will be on Saturday nights, nine will be on Sundays and the remaining eight will be either Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
With the exception of the October 12 home opener, all Whale non-Sunday home games will be 7:00 PM starts. Sunday home contests will face off at 3:00 PM, except for November 4, which is a 7:00 start, and December 2, which faces off at 5:00.
In total on the season, the Whale and Sound Tigers will battle ten times in GEICO Connecticut Cup play, five in Hartford and five in Bridgeport. Connecticut’s most familiar opponent in 2012-13 will again be their cross-border rivals the Springfield Falcons, with whom the Whale will tangle 12 times (six home, six road). The Whale will also meet the New England-rival Portland Pirates eight times (four home, four away) and Northeast Division foes the Albany Devils and Adirondack Phantoms six times each (three home, three road). The Providence Bruins and Manchester Monarchs are also each on the Whale’s schedule six times (three home, three away).
The Whale are also scheduled to meet the defending Calder Cup champions the Norfolk Admirals four times (two home, two away), and also have four battles (two home, two road) vs. fellow Eastern Conference members the Worcester Sharks, St. John’s IceCaps and Hershey Bears. The balance of the Whale’s schedule consists of two games each (one home, one away) against the Syracuse Crunch, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Binghamton Senators.
