A long time ago there were two brothers, both working in the fields during the day; and in the evening they would divide the grain evenly between them. One brother was married, with a wife and several children. The other brother, he was not married at all.
One day the brother who was married said to himself: “You know it’s not fair that my brother and I divide the grain evenly between us. I have a wife and several children to care for me in my old age; but my brother, he has no one.”
And so secretly at night, the brother who was married would cross the field with grain from his barn, and place the grain in his brother’s barn; so that his brother would never be without.
One day the brother who was not married, said to himself: “It’s not fair that my brother and I divide the grain evenly between us. I just have myself; but my brother, he has a wife and several children to feed.
And so secretly at night, the brother who was not married would cross the field with grain from his barn, and place the grain in his brother’s barn; so that his brother and family would never be without.
And both brothers were always surprised that their grain supplies had been replenished.
Then one night, it happened.
Both brothers met each other carrying grain to each other’s barn. Only then did they realize what both had been doing for the other.
They dropped their sacks, embraced each other; and they laughed and they cried.
The legend is that God saw the two brothers meeting the other, and God said:
“Where those two boys are, it is a holy place. It is a place of loyalty, and it is a place of faith. And it is that spot where I choose for my temple to be built.”
