Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) announced today that he has been named to several of the most powerful committees in the Senate for the 112th Congress. Blumenthal will serve on the Committee on Armed Services, the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), and the Committee on Aging.

“I am excited and honored to join these committees, each with special meaning and relevance to Connecticut,” Blumenthal said. “While we face great challenges, we also have the chance to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of the American people, from students, to seniors, to our brave men and women in uniform serving overseas. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate on sound, practical solutions for the people of Connecticut and our entire nation.”

Committee on Armed Services:

The Committee on Armed Services is responsible for overseeing the nation’s military forces - including the Department of Defense, military research and development, and a variety of other national security issues. One of Senator Blumenthal’s top priorities will be protecting the Naval Submarine Base New London from any threat of closure and working closely with Connecticut companies that have defense related jobs.

Committee on the Judiciary:

The Committee on the Judiciary has a wide range of responsibilities including judicial nominations, certain counterterrorism and homeland security issues, intellectual property, criminal law, as well as maintaining oversight of the Department of Justice. Senator Blumenthal has been a champion of Internet privacy and safety, as well an aggressive advocate for consumer protection, and looks forward to using his position to fight for Connecticut families.

Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP):

The Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions has jurisdiction over a variety of domestic policy areas. The committee will allow Senator Blumenthal to continue vital work on health issues ranging from drug regulation to food safety, and to continue working to enhance the quality of our educational system for both students and teachers in Connecticut and across the country.

Special Committee on Aging:

The Special Committee on Aging serves a critical role in exploring and investigating all issues pertaining to senior Americans, including Social Security and Medicare. Senator Blumenthal is dedicated to protecting the fundamental rights of our senior citizens and welcomes the opportunity to continue doing so through this committee.
