A prominent constitutional lawyer and legal commentator added her endorsement today to the many others for Martha Dean , the Republican Party-endorsed candidate for Attorney General. Civil rights lawyer Karen Torre of Guilford, said, “Martha Dean is the antidote to 20 years of the Attorney General’s Office shaking down law-abiding businesses and using litigation for political gain.”

Torre has for decades successfully represented whistleblowers in high-profile cases exposing government waste and misconduct. She is best known as the attorney for the 20 New Haven firefighters whose landmark victory before the U.S. Supreme Court last year not only put a national spotlight on corrupt race politics in New Haven, but helped many other victims of reverse discrimination and illegal government practices around the country.

“The good news for Connecticut this year,” Torre said, “is Martha Dean .” She added, “For the first time in decades we have a chance to show the people what a highly educated and sensible conservative lawyer can do for them.”

Torre continued, “Martha Dean is super smart, she’s a no-nonsense manager, and most important to me, highly ethical. Martha Dean’s got the right stuff - to retain what is good in that office, reform and get rid of what is bad, and rein in its runaway and unaccounted for budget. Of supreme value to the people of Connecticut, Martha Dean has the strength of character necessary to resist using state legal actions for political gain. And that would be a most welcome change from the past.”

Torre, who has long battled on behalf of clients’ constitutional rights, pointed out, “In contrast with her opponents in the Attorney General race, Martha Dean is passionately committed to the fundamental principles of our state and federal constitutions: the principles of limited government, state’s rights and individual liberty. These have made our State great, and our nation the envy of the world.”

Torre emphasized, “Too many politicians have lost sight of these principles, at great cost to our prosperity, our state autonomy, and to our freedoms. We need an attorney general who has not just the personal will but the political courage to stand up for us, and if necessary, to stand between us and an increasingly overbearing and intrusive federal government and say: ‘Don’t tread on us!’”
