Malloy accepts eight debate invitations, hopes Foley will join him

Democratic candidate for Governor Dan Malloy recently announced that he has accepted invitations to participate in eight gubernatorial debates during the general election. Saying that he hopes to do “as many debates as possible between now and November 2,” Malloy urged his Republican opponent Tom Foley to accept the invitations as well. Malloy’s running mate, State Comptroller Nancy Wyman, also said that she is looking forward to debating her opponent in the Lt. Governor’s race.

“Since I began a run for Governor more than six months ago, my goal has been very clear: to talk to as many Connecticut residents as possible about my values, my experience, and my ideas for getting Connecticut back on track,” said Malloy. “I welcome an open and honest discussion of the issues facing Connecticut, issues like job creation, expanding access to health care, and improving our public education system. Connecticut voters deserve to know who they are putting their trust in to run the state in the years ahead.”

The invitations Malloy has accepted to date include three debates sponsored by the League of Women Voters, as well as ones hosted by the Courant and Fox61, The New London Day and News Channel 8, the University of Connecticut, NBC30, and a coalition of Chambers of Commerce in Southwestern Connecticut.

Continued Malloy, "There are some very real differences between Tom and me – in terms of our values, our experience, and our positions on some very important issues. We should want to talk about them as often as possible, and we should do it in public."

Wyman joined Malloy in calling for an open and honest discussion of the issues, and said she “looks forward to debating Mark Boughton.”

“A thorough vetting of each candidate’s experiences and qualifications is certainly something that voters want – and it’s something each candidate should want to give them.”
