North Haven, CT - To celebrate Connecticut’s inaugural Diaper Needs Awareness Day, The Diaper Bank will host its 4th annual “Rock Your Baby” event on Thursday October 27th. The goal of the event is to honor those who have aided in the recognition of diaper needs as a pressing social issue and who have contributed to the growth of the Diaper Bank. “Rock Your Baby” will take place from 6:30-9:00pm at The Old Guitar Store, 153 East Street, New Haven, CT. Tickets are $52 and discounts will be provided to those who bring packs of diapers.
The event will be preceded by a panel policy discussion open to the public regarding the effect of diaper need on children and their families. Panelists scheduled to appear include Senator Toni Harp of the Connecticut State Senate; Dr. Megan Smith, a professor of psychology at Yale University; Teresa Younger, the executive director of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women; Rudy Brooks, formerly a bureau chief with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families; and Alison Weir, an attorney at Wiggin and Dana. Joanne Goldblum, founder of The Diaper Bank, will moderate. The panel discussion will take place from 5:00-6:30 pm at the Old Guitar Store, 153 East Street, New Haven, CT. There is no charge to attend the discussion.
The Diaper Bank provides diapers to poor and low-income families across CT through local community agencies. In addition to distributing diapers, The Diaper Bank strives to raise awareness of the economic stress that diaper need places on families. Currently, government programs like WIC and food stamps do not cover the cost of diapers. All proceeds from “Rock Your Baby” will support The Diaper Bank and its commitment to reducing economic burden on Connecticut’s parents.
“We are thrilled that the Governor has recognized the importance of keeping babies in clean diapers and are looking forward to celebrating this occasion together through our annual Rock Your Baby celebration,” says Acting Executive Director Janet Stolfi Alfano. “We are also looking forward to honoring some of the organizations which have played an important role in supporting our efforts to move the needle on the issue of diaper need.”
The Diaper Bank was founded by Joanne Goldblum, a New Haven social worker, in 2004. The organization distributes more than 2 million diapers annually to families in New Haven, Hartford, Bridgeport, and Middlesex County.
