STAMFORD, CT - The City’s Emergency Operations Center is open and has been monitoring the storm. There has been approximately 5” – 6” of snowfall so far in Stamford. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 pm EST this afternoon. Stamford Public Schools are closed today.

Heavy snowfall, freezing and blowing and drifting of powdery snow has created hazardous travel conditions. Snow is packed on the roadways and roadways are slick.

The Office of Operations has been plowing the roadways throughout the night utilizing over sixty vehicles. It is recommended to stay off the roads so that Operations can continue to plow and spread material. If you must travel use extreme caution.

Winds continue from the north at 15 to 25 mph and wind gusts up to 35 mph. Wind chills, from 10 below to around 20 below zero this morning, increasing to 5 to 10 below zero this afternoon. Wind chills below zero could lead to frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold. Wind chills 15 below or colder will lead to an even more rapid onset of hypothermia.

The Heaviest snowfall will be through mid-morning. The lowest wind chills and visibilities will be through around midday.

Temperatures: 1 below to 11 above zero

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

Winter storms and extreme cold are dangerous. People can be injured in traffic accidents, on icy roads, from falls and from hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold. When the extreme cold hits, it's important for you to do what you can to stay warm. If you must go out into the elements dress in layers and cover your skin.
