FARMINGTON, CT - Red Cross shelters are open in East Lyme and Stonington, providing a safe, warm place for people in Southeastern Connecticut hard-hit by power outages and dealing with storm-related flooding.
“Red Cross workers are staffing shelters and welcoming people who have been displaced by the blizzard,” said American Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman. “Travel restrictions have been lifted in Connecticut and residents who can safely travel are able to do so.” Shipman added that up-to-date information on shelters is available by calling 211 or visiting www.211ct.org.
The shelters are at the following locations:
East Lyme: East Lyme Middle School, 37 Society Road
Stonington: Stonington High School, 176 S. Broad Street, Pawcatuck
Shipman said shelters will have basic supplies, but residents can make their visit more comfortable by bringing some personal items:
Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, or air mattresses
A change of clothing
Personal hygiene supplies
A book, a game that can be played quietly or a favorite toy for children
Prescription medications
Anyone evacuating to a shelter, to a hotel or to stay with family is strongly encouraged to register on the American Red Cross Safe and Well Linking Web Site at www.redcross.org/safeandwell. The site is accessible from computers and smart phones. The site contains an automatic link to update users’ Facebook pages.
Additional shelters may open as needs and conditions evolve. Remember that, while service animals are permitted at shelters, pets are not.
