Cos Cob, CT - The Greenwich Historical Society History & Art Camp offers children in second through seventh grades a highly interactive two-week camp experience at beautiful Bush-Holley Historic Site on Strickland Road in Cos Cob, CT. Duringthe first session for grades 4 to 7 (July 1 through July 15), the group will learn what it was like to be a child in the late 1700s when the merchant Bush family lived on the site and will explore themes from the Civil War with a special visit to the Voices from the Civil War Interactive Family Gallery on site. Craft activities will include cross-stitching, baking, calligraphy and more. During the second week, campers will work with visiting artists to explore a variety of art materials; gain inspiration from the site's gardens, house museum and exhibits; and prepare for their own special art exhibition.
During the second session (July 18 through July 29), campers in grades 2 and 3 will dress up to role play characters from the early nation and the Civil War era, learn games children would have played back then and prepare for a theatrical performance. During the second week, campers will paint, draw, make prints, learn origami and participate in perennial summertime activities such as making homemade ice cream and fishing with a bamboo pole.
Sessions are fun, challenging and age appropriate. In addition to experiencing the period gardens, gallery exhibition and historic house museum, campers will enjoy a field trip and Friday Parents' Day each week. The professional staff includes experienced museum educators and counselors who have a special interest in history and art. Re-enactors, working artists and guest educators round out the team.
